A year after the demise of the seminal New Jersey punk band, former Misfit Glenn Danzig returned to the world of music, this time leading the proto-metal outfit Samhain. Comprised of Danzig, and one-time Misfits drummer Eerie Von on bass, Samhain (Gaelic for "summers end") pursued a less campy version of the Misfits' violent horror imagery, delving deep into the realms of pagan and satanic themes. DC native Lyle Preslar (ex-Minor Threat) briefly came aboard on guitars but was soon replaced by Steve Zing. Samhain's "Initium" was recorded and released as the band's first LP. Although the lineup was complete, Preslar is credited on lead guitar for four of the album's ten tracks.

Samhain returned to the studio and cut the "Unholy Passion" EP which was soon followed by the full-length release, "Samhain III- November Coming Fire". By this time, the Samhain lineup expanded to a four piece with Danzig and Von joined by Pete "Damien" Marshall and drummer London May. Samhain "Final Descent" was cut and Damien was replaced by John Christ. In late 1987, Samhain was disbanded and Glenn formed Danzig with Eerie Von on bass and Christ as lead guitarist.

Previously out of print for much of the 1990's, E-Magine has recently reissued the entire catalog of Samhain albums, digitally remastered, collected together as the Samhain box set. Each of the four albums, "Initium", "Unholy Passion", "Samhain III- November Coming Fire", and "Final Descent" come packaged in individual slipcases and are joined by an album of previously unreleased live tracks dating from a 1985 show at the Danceteria in New York City and a later 1986 performance at the Metro in Chicago. Also included is a cover painting by Martin Edmond, an eight page comic book, also previously unreleased, and most notably, an exclusive video containing archival Samhain performance footage from the mid-80's and a 28-page booklet featuring lyrics, previously unpublished photographs from the band's personal collection, gig flyers, and liner notes by Steve Zing, London May and Glenn Danzig.

Suitable for either the casual Misfits fan or the die-hard Danzig fanatic, the Samhain box set is an indispensable compendium of Samhain recordings.
