Album: Diana's spunky mariachi songs are a counterpart to traditional mariachi lyrics which point the finger at women as the culprits of men's woes. Most of the tunes are bright and humorous such as "El son del antojo," in which the singer silently flirts with a passer-by, and "Mi novio Jose," in which the singer has to invent a boyfriend on the spot to get rid of a boring would-be partner. Diana dips into a serious note with the title track, a huapango about a definitive break-up. The lyrics are included in a booklet, making the material accessible to listeners who are not fluent in Spanish. The instrumentation is traditional: voices, trumpets, violins, guitar, vihuela, and guitarron. Bio: Originally trained in classical music, Diana ("La Platanita") Ransdell has performed with Mariachi America since moving from Mexico to Arizona in 1987. She enjoys mariachi music because of the unique dialogue between the trumpet and violin and the snappy numbers that breathe vitality into any environment. She also enjoys mariachi music because it allows her to work at parties and other social events. When she played in the symphony, she remembers dragging reluctant friends to concerts and feeling distance from the audience. In contrast, she finds this popular Mexican art form immediate and rewarding; however, she has felt the need for modern lyrics that reflect the feminine point of view! Although songs do not translate easily, a brief run-down is the following: 1) El son del antojo--The "son" of anticipation I'll talk to you later; right now I'm with my boyfriend. (A "son" is a specific rhythm typical of mariachi music.) 2) Mi novio José--My Boyfriend Joe You're so persistent that I have to invent a boyfriend to escape you. 3) Cuando te mueves--When You Move Your dance movements are such a turn-on that you=re driving me crazy. 4) Cómo crees? What Makes You Think So? I=ve got no reason to be interested in you. 5) Nada más que ver--Forget about It It's over, buddy; you had your chance. 6) Tantas cosas--So Many Things There are so many things I could be doing instead of wasting time thinking of you. 7) Mi lindo diván--My Beautiful Couch In my dreams you're an angel, but just the same, I think I'll sleep on the couch. 8) Véte a dormir--Go to Bed You're so tired that you might as well go to bed while I go out and have a good time. 9) Te despides con un beso--You Say Goodbye with a Kiss I live for the brief moments in which I get to see you. 10) No te soporto más--I Can't Stand You Anymore You think you're hot stuff--as if! 11) El rey del "rock"--The King of Rock (and Roll) You sing so out of tune that I=d rather look at you than listen to you.
