WHO IS THIS GUY, ANYWAY? Darrell's inspiration is found at the intersection of good intentions and bad acid. A self-confessed casualty of the sixties, he is able, some thirty years later, to speak in fairly coherent sentences and feed and bathe himself on a regular basis. With a wit that is both insightful and sharp, and a world (and larger) view that is mind-boggling, his music veers between the sacred and profane, the sublime and the ridiculous. A meditative instrumental soundtrack suitable for listening during one's deepest introspection might give way on the next track to a jagged scene from someone's worst nightmare. A hypnotic and mesmerizing dance piece can easily be followed by a twisted blues that at once not only satirizes the old masters, but provides a solid groove for some truly original improvising. Although his music is found in the "electronic" section of most MP3 download sites, that's not the direction initially taken---"Like so many other things I do, what started out as a crystal clear sense of purpose mutated by itself into something of its own. It's easy to have a PURE IDEA of what you want to do, but then life starts massaging and twisting and re-directing that idea, and something springs up in place of your original concept--something that in and of itself is MORE organic and true, because you've let the art take control, instead of trying to control the art." WHAT IS HE TALKING ABOUT? "Originally I classified my music as Electronica, but I'm not even sure what that stands for anymore--I mean, do you know how many subcategories there are in popular music right now? I saw, and still see, my general direction in those terms, but it's not like I'm driving down the highway, taking the straightest line from here to there, or that I'm in possession of laser-like focus, but rather as if I'm in some underwater current, flowing generally in a particular direction, sometimes faster, sometimes slower, but with the ability to stop and study a coral outcropping, or a beautiful fish, or some ugly critter--then, after a while, let go, and move on, or rather, be moved on." SO WHAT WAS THE ORIGINAL CONCEPT? "My music takes non-standard instruments, including found sounds and electronic instruments, places them in a rhythmic context of one type or another, and superimposes melodies and harmonies that appeal to me at the moment--medieval, jazzy, new age, whatever. That's what's calling me, what's pulling me forward musically, but like I said, I enjoy taking side trips. I'm at a point now where I don't even claim to be a musician. What I'm doing right now is more like sound collage--sound montage. It's a viable art with lots of precedents. I'm not going to claim to be picking up the torch from where others have left it, and I'm not on the bleeding edge, but I'm pretty close to it--I'm riding the technology and there's an audience for what I do. The best I can do is say, try it and give a listen. If you like it, cool." Check out the artist's website: http://www.darrelladams.com Track List: 1. Hello Caller 2. No Quiero Estropear La Fiesta 3.
