Simon Monserrat comes from a "musical" family were both his father, Marcos, is a musician, and his uncle, Roberto, was a musician too. Roberto were also the co-founder of Federico y su Combo, (once awarded for "el mejor sexteto del Caribe"). Hes been a frilancemusician for about 20 years as a sideman, playing with artists like: Kirk Whalum, Bebo Valdes, Vincent Chappotin, Maximo Jimenez, Linda Tillery & Cultural Heritage Choir, Cyndee Peters, Magnus Lindgren & the Radio Jazz Group, Elio Villafranca, and George "Chiqui" Dixon, to name a few. together with Linda tillery & the Cultural Heritage Choir hes done colaborations with: Rokia Traoré, Olu Dara, Colin Linden, Corey Harris, B´net Marracesh, Corey Harris, Ruthie Foster, Alpha Yaya Diallo, Tish Hinajosa, among others... With Djeli he felt it was time to be a bandleader. In the African tradition, the Djeli or Griot embodies the culture of his people. The Djeli is a historian, musician, dancer and performer who has the task of reminding the community at large of its traditional greatness, and of the accomplishments of those who have come before. Using the performing arts, the Djeli points out the contributions of each family group, generation by generation, that have contributed to the progress of society.
