What the ???? is AFRO-TANGO? A Classically trained Quartet - Accordion, Piano, Violin and Bass, that plays Argentinian Tango Nuevo, joined by a traditional African Musician from the famous African Music Performing troupe "Amampondo". African drums combined with Astor Piazzolla might SOUND like a strange concept, but audiences have loved it.It's just so electric to hear the Tango take on a new guise with powerful African percussion on African drums (the Djembe) and a Kenyan Kayombo. We use an accordion, not the usual Bandoneon associated with this music. Some afficionados were sceptical, but our accordionist (A BULGARIAN LIVING IN AFRICA - GO FIGURE...) has studied the Argentinian style to his bones. Some tangos are for dancing, we do the famous Tango from "Scent of a woman", and some are classic Tango Nuevo: the great Piazzolla numbers are there - Adios Nonino and Primavera Porteno are given broad treatments and Libertango are done with African Drumming. We have done quite a few shows with Tango Dancers and while the dance adds its own electricity, this CD is great for listening to, according to our fans! I guarantee that if you enjoy Piazzolla, or Tango, this will be worth your time and effort. We are respectful of the tradition of Tango Nuevo, but I can honestly say it is a UNIQUE, NEW sound (OK, every body says that, but no-one has done this music with African Instruments before, right?)
