Raised in Hanover, New Hampshire, Adam Tucker started playing classical Western flute at age 7. In 1983, after hiking the 2,200-mile Appalachian trail from Georgia to Maine, he began studying the shakuhachi with Grand Master Yoshinobu Taniguchi at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Adam soon earned the title Chikushin (Bamboo Heart) and became an assistant instructor in the Kinko school of shakuhachi in Japan. In 1989, after several years' training at the Hakata Fuke Zen Temple in Itchoken, Adam received the prestigious Komuso Honsoku certificate. He has studied formal Japanese music history and performance at imperial universities in Kyushu and Tokyo as a Fulbright Fellow and a Monbusho scholar. He has also studied traditional Korean music at the University of Hawaii and at the National Korean Academy of Culture in Pundang, Korea. Balancing his passion for Japanese art and the shakuhachi with his evolving career in medicine, Adam is one of the few Americans to have passed medical-license exams in both the US and Japan. In his frequent international performances, he continues to search out "the way of healing" through the theme Enlightenment in a single sound. Other shakuhachi recordings featuring Chikushin include the CD-ROM Microsoft Musical Instruments (1992), and Night Music (2001), a meditative collaboration with the Seattle Compline Choir (available through www.ComplineChoir.org).
