All Genres > Jazz > World Fusion > SNARKY PUPPY: the only constant

While pioneering it’s own unique combination of musical traditions, the members of Denton, Texas-based Snarky Puppy have shared the stage with some of the world’s most famous jazz, soul, and funk musicians. Among them are Dave Brubeck, Maria Schneider, Dave Douglas, Phil Woods, Maynard Ferguson, Bill Holman, Morcheeba, Headhunters, Dave Fiuczynski (of the Screaming Headless Torsos), Clyde Stubblefield (of James Brown and the JB's), Dick Oatts, Jimmy Cobb, Marc Johnson, Slide Hampton, Jimmy Heath, Michael Spiro, Jovino Santos Neto, Benny Golson, “Snooky” Young, and countless more. What’s remarkable about this is that the oldest member of the nine-piece group is 23 years old. Snarky Puppy is made up of some of the finest young jazz musicians in the country, with their backgrounds as diverse as the music itself. London, New Mexico, Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Dakota, Indiana, and Texas have provided these players with the different musical and cultural perspectives essential to the creation of a sound of this kind.

Snarky Puppy was formed in 2004 by bassist and primary composer Michael League. The band was signed by SiTMoM Records in fall of 2005, and subsequently recorded and released their first studio record, “The Only Constant”, in Winter of 2006. The CD has met critical acclaim from the industry’s top musicians and representatives (“…beautifully written, arranged, produced, and played by all…tasty percussion and drums, warm bass lines, clean, lovely Rhodes work, excellent horn arranging and clean phrasing abound…” –TAXI A&R / “…there’s some serious passion in these guys’ playing…this is beautiful music…heavy writing…watch out for these guys…” – legendary New Orleans drummer John Vidacovich) and has created a serious buzz among musicians and non-musicians alike. The group draws upon a variety of musical traditions compositionally – Latin American, African, Balkan, and North American are the most present – but is also heavy on more modern styles, especially jazz, funk, fusion, and drum n’ bass. All things considered, the heart of this band is groove. “We’re trying to move people,” says League, “and the best way for us to do that is to give them something to really feel in their body. Everything else comes after that- the horn lines, the textures… the cornerstone is the feel, the pocket, the pulse.”

Intricacies aside, the most attractive aspect of Snarky Puppy is their onstage energy. The joy of these nine young musicians making music together is contagious, and has made them one of the fastest growing groups of their kind. Few instrumental ensembles have the ability to reach such a diverse audience. Snarky Puppy has won and continues to win over jazz, funk, soul, pop, rock, world, and jam band crowds with their energetic and dynamic live show, having performed in venues as varied as their audiences. Whatever the setting, whatever the crowd, Snarky Puppy has the ability to really move listeners. And to them, that is what it’s all about.
