Shoehorn-Trio Calzador (CD is also titled Trio Calzador) World Jazz Improv by Trio Calzador Trio Calzador is: Leader-Tap dancer and saxophonist/vocalist Shoehorn , featuring Skip Elliot Bowman - acoustic bass & Toshi Onizuka - guitarist (The CD was recorded without overdubs, with Shoehorn tracking tap dance percussion, etap(TM),and alto sax simultaneously, just like their live show.) Trio Calzador creates an intoxicating blend of sound and rhythm with a range of influences including flamenco, jazz, Hot-Club-style swing, Latin, Asian, African, Japanese enka, and bossa nova. Shoehorn has realized a dream of weaving various threads of his life and musical experience into a dynamic world-jazz-jam band. In addition to his shoes and horn, he uses the Tappercussion(TM) Mark VII etap (TM) MIDI instrument to add percussive sounds from drum kits and steel drums to sitar and marimba. While the Trio is primarily an instrumental group, Shoehorn also sings a few tunes, in several languages. Skip Elliott Bowman is a versatile virtuoso on electric or acoustic. Guitarist Toshi Onizuka of Japan spent 5 years in Spain playing Flamenco professionally. The CD was recorded without overdubs, with Shoehorn tracking tap dance percussion, etap(TM),and alto sax simultaneously, just like the live show. Most of the tunes are original, but the disc includes a Brazilian tune, a jazz standard and a Japanese song, the only vocal on the CD. Shoehorn and Trio Calzador appeared on OPB TV's Artbeat Thursday, October 23rd and the 26th,2003 The Name: The band name reflects our music, which has a Spanish accent, especially due to Toshi's Flamenco-drenched guitar style. Calzador is Spanish for "Shoehorn". Shoehorn on how group formed: "I convened the members for a gig and decided to record these guys for my new CD, titled Trio Calzador. I have known Skip for years, since we were both often featured at Berbati's when our mentor, the late great bassist Leroy Vinnegar, held forth there every Tuesday. Skip has played a number of shows with me since. Toshi I met last year and we became fast friends, having similair experiences as foriegners defying assumptions- he as a Japanese playing Flamenco and me being an Irish-American jazz tap dancer who plays the sax, sings in Japanese and is a Latin music freak! We also enjoy the trans-lingual puns between Spanish and Japanese that no one else gets!" We regard anything we hear and like as "open-source code" and feel free to adapt it to our own ends. We do mostly orginals on the CD. We also cover many artists from divergent disciplines: Miles Davis, A.C. Jobim, Benny Goodman, Tito Puente, Enka singer Saburo Kitajima, classic Latin songs, jazz standards, you might even hear us do a Santana tune. Whatever we play we always do it with conviction and inhabit the tune with our own soul and sound. We get a broad demographic for our audience because we are fun, yet totally committed to what we do. Our approach makes it exotic yet accessible to anyone. Our sound is primarily acoustic, but we'll get funky for awhile and then play romantic, then maybe hit a Flamenco rhythm and go very high-energy with that. We can come out of that with a bright swing feel and then go to mysterious Asian territory.
