Ronnie Wells, surrounded by her fantastic crew with Houston Person on featured tracks, spins a soulful and intense web of sound to catch all listeners. Jesse R. Nettles VP-Jazz Karma and Associates It's sometimes funny how albums get their names. One day, Ronnie Wells and I were talking about this project and bouncing names off one another. Some of the names we discussed were philosophical, some silly. It was after one of the latter that Ronnie said, "Ron Elliston said we should just call it Mostly Ballads since that's what it is." The rest is, as they say, history. Ronnie Wells is one of the best balladeers you'll have the pleasure of listening to. This release showcases her unique stylings, along with one of the most influential "ballad" saxophonists in Jazz history-Houston Person. One would be foolish to assume that because Houston and Ronnie perform ballads so well that they don't swing hard. They can swing with the best of them, and with Ron Elliston feeding the group his lush and always interesting chord voicings, even often played tunes take on a new life. Ronnie Wells and Ron Elliston fans will be glad to hear the familiar rhythm section of James King (bass) and Mike Smith (drums) adding their voices to the mix. This group has been together so long that they instinctively know where to go. When you consider what "Mostly Ballads" is, a hopeless romantic like me, can't help but wear out the laser on my CD player and the heads on my tape deck. This recording should come with a warning label, "Don't play this around someone you don't have strong feelings for. You may fall in love."
