Going into their tenth year together, the high steppers of Mama Digdown's Brass Band are shaking up crowds and critics alike with their jubilant approach to the venerable tradition that is the New Orleans brass band. Mama Digdown's nods respectfully to the past, while joyfully playing the music of its own generation Handily adding elements of R&B, traditional jazz and funk, Mama Digdown's creates a raucous sound that saxophonist Branford Marsalis describes as "PHAT." Mama Digdown's Brass Band has been performing at clubs and festivals from Wisconsin to Louisiana, and from New York to California, earning them a reputation as one of the hottest brass bands on the scene. Mama Digdown's has also shared bills with such legendary artists as Dr. John, The Dirty Dozen and The Neville Brothers. Recorded in 1999, Slippery 7 has both funk and old school brass band tunes. The album starts with the party anthem "Palm Court Strut" written by the late Danny Barker, who is considered the father of the modern brass band. Later, Mama Digdown's lays the funk on thick with the theme to "Sanford and Son" and originals "The Sack" and "Against the Wall." Slippery 7 also features guest artist Leroy Jones. Jones, regarded by many as the best trumpet player in New Orleans, is both a band leader and trumpet soloist for Harry Connick Jr.'s band. Leroy contributes vocals and trumpet to "Paul Barbarin Second Line" and "I've Found a New Baby." His singing and trumpet solos are soulful and represent the very best of New Orleans.
