Through the Years: Alex Coke/The Worthy Constituents (CreOp Muse 009), chronicles saxophonist/flutist Coke and his Constituents via recordings made from 1988 to 2001. Coke's constituents through the years appearing on the CD include composer and piano virtuoso Rich Harney, Martin Banks on trumpet, bassists Jeff Haley, David Morgan, Edwin Livingston and Arjen Gorter, and drummers A.D. Mannion and Steve Schwelling. The cd is dedicated to A.D. Mannion, jazz drummer extraordinaire, who died in 2000. Alex Coke, born in Dallas, Texas, received his B.A. from the University Of Colorado at Boulder in 1976, with emphasis on flute performance. In 1974 Coke and Harney met through a mutual friend, bassist, Stone Savage. They immediatley started playing and working together, forming one of the steadiest collaborations in central Texas. Coke has performed with Rich Harney in various formations for over 25 years. Before moving to Amsterdam in the early '90's he received several local awards including: 1990 Best Saxophonist, Music City Critics Poll/Austin Texas 1990 Best Jazz Bands Music City Critics Poll/Austin Texas (Countenance #1, and Worthy Constituents #3) both with Rich Harney. 1990 Best Unsigned Bands Musician Magazine (Countenance, and Worthy Constituents) With Rich Harney 1988-1989 Best Jazz Band, Austin Chronicle Music Awards (Chris Duarte and Justus) Other 2002 appointed to the wage/scale committee of the Austin Federation of Musicians Local 433. 1989-1991 Music Peer Panel, City of Austin Cultural Contracts (Chairman 1990-1991) 1987-1993 Steering Commitee, Creative Opportunity Orchestra 1978-current Member, Austin Federation of Musicians 1978-current Member, BMI 1993-current Member, SENA 1996-current Member, BIM From 1990-2000 he toured and recorded with the internationally renowned Dutch jazz group, the Willem Breuker Kollektief. An improvisor at heart, Coke's eclectic attitude has led him to explore everything from Be-Bop to Huddie Ledbetter. His flute studies have ranged from Eric Dolphy to Indian ragas on the bamboo flute to extended flute techniques such as those researched by Robert Dick, Ann LaBerge and Wil Offermans. Coke's multifarious bands include New Texas Swing, and his post-bop quintet, The Worthy Constituents, a collaboration with longtime partner, pianist Rich Harney and the late Martin Banks on trumpet. Coke and Harney have recently released a new cd of spirituals called "Soul Prayers" on the Aardvark lable.
