"4 STARS. This is a timely release, a 16-track testament to the power of passion and dexterity presented by this motley crew of musicians." Yeow Kai Chai, The Straits Times (Singapore)

Jazz in Singapore?? Yes, Jazz is definitely happening in Singapore in a big way. Somehow, somewhere, somebody turned on this island to the jazz sounds coming out of New Orleans, New York, California, Chicago, and Europe. The music took hold, and the scene arguably compares well to any major Western metropolis.

Kingsworld Management has compiled a first-ever "snapshot" of Jazz in Singapore, highlighting Singapore's homegrown talent and also the international artists currently performing here.

"The idea came about after the successful launch of our "Blues in ... Singapore" compilation - we looked around and realized what a wealth of jazz artists there is in Singapore. We decided to let the rest of the world hear the jazz coming out of this small Asian country," said Kingsworld Managing Director Curtis Kovach.

Though there are literally hundreds of jazz musicians performing in Singapore, the CD highlights the best of the best.

"When putting together the list of artists for the CD, we of course wanted to include Singapore's incredible homegrown talent," said Kovach. Many of these artists are already firmly established not only in the local jazz scene but also in the international arena, like Jeremy Monteiro, Jacintha (Abisheganaden), Marina Xavier, Tanya Chua, Jessica (Soo), and newcomer Aubrey Ng.

Also included are the experienced artists who regularly play the nightclub circuit, including Christy Smith, Rick Smith (ChromaZone), Beebe Price, Clinton Carnegie, the incredible O' Donel "OD" Levy, Greg Chako, Dave D'aranjo, and visiting artist Matthew "Cadillac" Cooper.

The Thompson Big Band was added for it's big band sound - a rarity these days not just in Singapore.

And finally, no jazz compilation would be complete without a taste of Dixieland! Enter the Singapore Stompers!

For those new to the Jazz scene in Singapore, you can catch many of these acts at Harry's Bar, Swing, OD's Backstage, Somerset Bar, Jazz@Southbridge and you might even catch the occasional jazz tune mixed in with the blues at The Crazy Elephant.

** ATTENTION BLUES LOVERS **

The sister CD, "The Blues in ... Singapore" (2002, Kingsworld Management), is a first-ever compilation of blues songs from local and international blues artists performing in Singapore. This CD features Al & the Coholics, The Curtis King Band, The New Vintage Blues Band, Jeanne French, John Chee, and the "must see to believe" O'Donel "OD" Levy. You will be surprised to hear just how well the blues have been interpreted by some of Singapore's local artists - Muddy Waters would be proud!
