Piano – bass duets have a distinguished history in Jazz. Grace, this new live recording by Jeff Gardner and Down Beat Critics Poll winner David Friesen stands out through the sheer inventiveness of the playing, in a wide range of original compositions. High points: the elegant, Latin flavored opening track Esquencendo, the spectacular opening bass solo on Change of Heart, and the understated swing on All the Things You Are, featuring yet another breathtaking bass solo full of double stops and snarling strings.

The extraordinary bassist David Friesen has appeared as leader or co-leader on over 60 important Jazz recordings, and on over 150 CDs as a sideman. His collaborators include Stan Getz, Ralph Towner, Chick Corea, Joe Henderson, Dexter Gordon, Mose Allison, Paul Horn and Mal Waldron. Unique among bass players in his ability to give full length solo concerts, David has been described as “…one of the most eminent exponents of the instrument” (Los Angeles Times), and possessing “awesome technique, power, singing tone and metaphysical dedication” ((New York Post). A past winner of the Downbeat Critics Poll, the magazine has awarded no less than four of his previous releases the coveted five-star rating.

Jeff Gardner, pianist and composer, was born in New York. His studies included jazz piano with Jaki Byard and John Lewis, and harmony and composition with Nadia Boulanger. He has since recorded and performed around the world with Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny, Eddie Gomez, Clark Terry, Slide Hampton, Freddie Hubbard, Eddie Harris, Gary Peacock, and many others. Dividing his time between lengthy stays and tours in Brazil, France, and the U.S, Jeff has been able to develop a significant following not only as a Jazz pianist, but also in Latin music. Currently member of the New York University faculty, he regularly gives master classes in conservatories and universities in the U.S. and abroad.

•“Grace” is aptly entitled…. eloquent and refined. The sound is cool and sophisticated and introspective. Gardner and Friesen are masterful on this recording of beautifully articulated tunes and stories…bears repeated listening to the understated rhythms and moods and colors of their music.”

•“…a beautiful and glistening recording. Pianist Gardner, who infuses the songs with a shimmering personality that cascade from the speakers… He and Friesen share an empathy and telepathy that recalls Blanton / Ellington, Gomez/Evans, and Pedersen/Peterson. …the music produced is thoughtful and reflective, amply demonstrating both men's considerable talent.”
