Brilliant pianist Dennis Kobray, wearing a period costume, portrays a friend and fan of Scott Joplin's in this one hour long dramatic presentation on his life, times and music. Born in 1868 to former slaves, Scott Joplin grew up in the post-Reconstruction South where African Americans were denied basic civil rights and economic opportunities. Despite these obstacles, he and others helped create a form of music that captured America's heart. The energy and "feel-good" spirit of this music spread across the Atlantic and influenced many European composers. The polyrhythms and syncopations of West Africa, along with the harmonies and melodies of Europe and North America made ragtime "king" and Scott Joplin the king of ragtime. Today Joplin is acknowledged as one of America's greatest composers. Eight of his most famous works are heard here in their entirety including "The Entertainer" and the first million seller in U.S. history, "The Maple Leaf Rag". With talent, determination and self-discipline, Scott Joplin provided generations to come with a rich musical legacy.
