Latin Jazz bassist John Benitez has been “first call†sideman in New York - for Eddie Palmieri, Antonio Hart, Tito Puente, Wynton Marsalis, Mongo Santamaria, Chucho Valdes, Will Calhoun, Hilton Ruiz, Conrad Herwig, the Mingus Big Band, and many others. In 1997, he received a Grammy for his contributions to “Havanaâ€, by Roy Hargrove's Crisol Band, followed by a 1998 Grammy nomination for David Sanchez' release “Obsesionâ€. In 2000, Bass Player Magazine nominated John Benitez as “one of the top 100 bassists who shaped the 20th centuryâ€. “Descarga in New Yorkâ€, Benitez's first release as a leader, is a stunningly virtuosic tour de force, filled with exciting, relentless instrumental Caribbean grooves, spiced with a wide range of other musical influences – from Gospel to Funk.
