About the Band…
I moved to Japan from the United States in 2003, and soon after arriving met many fine jazz musicians. Yoshinosuke Kawabata (bass), Toshiya Murayama (piano), Keiichiro Uemura (drums) and I formed a jazz quartet, and we have played together since that time. We play contemporary jazz styles, standards, and originals throughout the Tokyo area. Please visit my website at www.interjazz.com/jimbutler/ for a band schedule and CD information. The Tokyo jazz fans have been so kind to us, and we have had some unforgettable nights and made some great friends. From concerts in Shinjuku, Meguro, Kichijoji, Kokubunji, to as far away as Haruna Town and Hamamatsu, we’ve been through a lot together! Some people say our band is like the old story of the monk and the monsters, “Sai Yu Ki”, because of our strong personalities! Our CD, Live in Tokyo! was recorded at the B-Flat Club in Akasaka and released in early 2006. Here our quest was to find personal expression within the context of straight ahead contemporary jazz.

About Jim…
I have been playing the saxophone for 28 years. I grew up in San Diego, California, where I studied briefly with altoist Charles McPherson, and for a long time with James Rotter of Los Angeles. After receiving my Bachelor of Music from San Diego State University, I moved to Austin, Texas. There I played jazz, blues and rock music. I also received a Master’s Degree in Music and Doctorate of Music from the University of Texas at Austin, where I studied saxophone with Harvey Pittel.

For a short time I taught music at the University of North Florida, where I met pianist Harry Pickens and altoist Bunky Green, who plays an “inside/outside” approach to jazz that I found fascinating. I also attended the David Liebman Jazz Master Class twice, and I became interested in his personal approach to music.

About the First CD, Journeys:
In 2003 I recorded my first CD as a leader. It is called Journeys and features former Warner Bros. drummer Gerry “the Thrasher” Gibbs who makes his residence in New York City. It also features some incredible playing by Central Texas hero Jim Kalson on the 6-string electric bass, big Andy Langham on the Rhodes electric keyboard (and the Steinway grand piano), young Hamilton Price on upright bass, and the sweet touch of drummer Angelo Stokes of Detroit. Jon Packard plays the classic 4-string fretted bass sound on several selections. Nick Cooper nails the trumpet part on one cut. My music on this album is a sort of mix of the different styles of music I was playing at the time: John Coltrane, Jimi Hendrix, pop music, jazz standards, and different kinds of folk music.

ジムの紹介
私は28年間サックスを演奏しております。カリフォルニア州サンディエゴで育ち、そこで、短い期間でしたがチャールズ・マクパーソンと学びました。そして、ロサンジェルス出身のジェームズ・ロッターとともに長く学びました。サンディエゴ州立大学から音楽学位を取得したのち、テキサス州オースティンに移り住みました。そこでは、ジャズやブルース、ロックなどの演奏を楽しみました。テキサス大学オースティン校より音楽修士号と博士号も取得し、ハービー・ピッテルとサックスを研究しました。

しばらく、ノース・フロリダ大学で音楽を教えていたのですが、そこで、ピアニストのハリー・ピケンズ、そして、私にはとても魅力のある“インサイド/アウトサイド”というジャズ・アプローチを試みるアルト・サックス奏者、バンキー・グリーンと出会ったのでした。また、デビッド・リーブマン・ジャズ・マスター・クラスにも2度参加し、彼の音楽に対する個性的なアプローチに興味を抱きました。

ファースト・アルバム“Journeys（ジャーニー）”
2003年、リーダーとして最初のCDをレコーディングいたしました。タイトルは“Journey（ジャーニー）”でニューヨークに住んでいる前ワーナー・ブラザーズのドラマー、ジェリー“the Thrasher”ギブスをフィチャーしています。その他のフィチャーとして、セントラル・テキサスのヒーローとして知られる６弦エレキ･ベーシストのジム・カルソン、Rhodes（ローズ）のエレキ・キーボード（そして、スタンウェイ・グランド・ピアノ）奏者 アンディー・ラングハム、若きアップライト・ベース・プレーヤー ハミルトン・プライス、そして、甘い音を奏でるデトロイト出身のドラマー アンジェロ・ストークスです。ジョン・パッカードは４弦フレットのベースで数曲奏でています。ニック・クーパーはトランペットを完璧に吹きこなしています。このアルバムでの私の音楽は、ジョン・コルトレーン、ジミー・ヘンドリックス、ポップ、ジャズ・スタンダード、多岐にわたるフォーク・ミュージックなど、当時演奏をしていたいろんな音楽スタイルのミックスといえるでしょう。

“ジム・バトラーは真のジャズからピュア・ロックまで何でも演奏でき、また、演奏を試みようとする奏者だ。曲が、時々、１曲の中でもおこりうるのだが、穏やかな曲調から騒々しさへの移行する。しかし、うまく全体のバランスを保っているのだ…。バトラーは十分な才能と経験を持ち、スウィング感を失うことなく新しい音楽作りにチャレンジすることができる。
