SEBASTIAN NOELLE TRIO w/ special guest John Abercrombie: FREEDOM TRAIL

Sebastian Noelle - guitar
Noah Jarrett - bass
Ferenc Nemeth - drums
special guest John Abercrombie - guitar

In May 2001 Sebastian Noelle invited jazz great John Abercrombie to record with Noelle's working trio, that consists of bassist Noah Jarrett and Ferenc Nemeth, a Hungarian drummer who has been living in the U.S. for many years now. The material consists of five originals, three by Noelle, two by Abercrombie and three standards, arranged by Noelle. The music came out fresh, with lots of spontaneous interaction between the players. The open yet compact sound of the ensemble sets an overall mood for the stylistic variety ranging from straight ahead jazz (John's "Played straight" or the standard "How deep is the Ocean") to the relaxed funky tune "Hey There!". More pointillistic approaches can be heard on Noelle's "Boston Mood", and - for a change - the "Last dance" changes meters between 7/8, 7/4 and 7/2.

New York City based guitarist Sebastian Noelle has been performing with his group on a regular basis. His name can be found on the programs of the city's hot spots for creative music such as the 55 Bar, Cornelia Street Café, Detour or CBGB's Gallery.

Sebastian Noelle's performance experiences include concerts at the North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, and tours in Holland, Germany, Japan and Slovakia.

After growing up in Germany in a musical family with a classical background, Sebastian became interested in the jazz traditions and the practice of improvised music. The curiosity for musical cultures from all over the world led him to New York, where his style was enriched by Middle Eastern, Asian and South American folk music.

As a sideman Sebastian Noelle has performed with Chris Cheek, Donny McCaslin, JoAnne Brackeen, Lewis Nash, Mulgrew Miller, Bob Moses, Maria Schneider, Joel Frahm, Bobby Shew, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ted Poor, John Hollenbeck, Scott Reeves, Michael Abene and Tony Moreno. He is a member of the BMI Composer's Workshop Orchestra, conducted by Mike Abene and Jim McNeely.

His original compositions also include works for big band, string quartets, solo guitar, voice, and small jazz ensembles and have been performed extensively in the U.S. and Europe.
