On February 17, 2003, jazz music welcomed the birth of six sons - Jaspects. Sons of the illustrious Morehouse College, drawing from their influences in jazz, hip-hop, R&B, and gospel music, Jaspects’ sole purpose is to distinctively enhance jazz music, while at the same time attempting to create the blueprint for music that can be truly appreciated by both, the common music aficionado, as well as the most educated music theorist. Individually, the group’s resume’ has exceeded all expectations. Musical director and pianist, Terrence Brown, appeared in 2005’s major motion Paramount Picture, Hustle & Flow, in which he performed a Negro Spiritual that he wrote the arrangement for entitled “Chang’d Mah Name.†This Movie was directed by Craig Brewer and produced by John Singleton. He is also a featured pianist on Carlos Santana’s latest album, “All That I Am,†on a song entitled “My Man†with Mary J. Blige and Big Boi (from Outkast). Brown was recently featured as a pianist for Memphis Symphony Orchestra in a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute Concert. Drummer Henry C. Conerway, III was a member of the 2005 HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) All-Star Big Band which allowed him the opportunity to perform for the I.A.J.E. (International Association of Jazz Educators) in Long Beach, California. The band’s trumpeter, James E. King serves as a member of the 2006 HBCU All-Star Big Band, and will have the honor of performing for the I.A.J.E. in New York City. As a collective the group has become a major ticket throughout the southeast and the mid-west. Likewise, having been called upon by the lovers of jazz, the band has enjoyed displaying its interpretation of traditional jazz music. Jaspects has performed for the likes of Yolanda Adams, Ted Turner, and even the ultimate jazz lover himself, Bill Cosby. In fact, after performing for Dr. Cosby, the band was asked to perform during the Ray Charles Tribute held in Beverly Hills, California. The event gave the group the opportunity to perform for the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, Quincy Jones, and Stevie Wonder, amongst others. Jaspects also completed its first self-managed tour during the spring of 2005. The tour served as the inauguration of the group’s debut album release, “In House Sessions,†which was met with critical acclaim. In a review on Jazzreview.com writer Thomas R. Erdmann wrote, “It’s not often one encounters a jazz recording where every single composition stands out, but they do in aces on this collection.†The group cites its opportunity to perform at “Baker’s Keyboard Lounge,†the oldest standing jazz club in the world, as one of its greatest accolades. Jaspects is also extremely blessed to have been winners in the “Future of Jazz Competition†in Atlanta, Georgia, sponsored by the Atlanta Bureau of Cultural Affairs and Churchill Grounds. This allowed the band the distinguished opportunity to perform at the 28th Annual Atlanta Jazz Festival. The band put on such a wonderful performance that they intrigued several media groups including BET Jazz which featured the band in a documentary on jazz festivals around the world. Their performance also marked them as the “favorite†for the 2006 Atlanta Jazz Festival. Though Jaspects strives tirelessly to “redefine all aspects of jazz,†they recognize that all things are attainable through Christ. Because each member of Jaspects has a personal relationship with God, the band, as a whole, acknowledges that all of their accomplishments have been blessings. Realizing that “with God, all things are possible,†Jaspects understands that keeping God first is most essential. Through help from God and a pursuit of excellence, the group’s chief objective is to convey all Positive Universal Truths through the only Universal Language – Music.
