This is the heavily anticipated third album from guitarist/composer Jake Hertzog. The CD was recorded live over two nights at the Iron Post in Urbana IL. For the project Jake assembled some of his favorite musicians he has played with to-date; drummer Zach Mangan and bassist Kevin Turner. The first night of the concerts featured special guest vibraphonist Kevin Hart and the second night featured percussionist Rocky Maffit. The goal of the project says Hertzog was to “…make music that people could really relate to in a live setting.†Of the eight tracks that made the final cut onto the CD, seven are Hertzog originals and one is a completely improvised piece. The group explores everything from traditional swing on “Orangutan†and “Tannhauser’s Father†to samba on “Mirage†to techo and hip-hop influenced grooves “Nuance†and “Coffee Cakeâ€. From haunting opening notes of “Perception†to the Revel inspired ballad “Levarâ€, this record truly shines. And all with the energy and raw feel of a live show.
