Jackson170 was formed as a ska band in 1999 and recorded a full length album, "Live From the Basement," later that same year. In 2002 the band saw many members come and go, including its singer and songwriter. Jackson170 was forced to adapt and evolve, a task with an end result higher than its starting point. "The Hoax" was recorded starting in July of 2002, completed via sparadic recording sessions over college breaks, and finally reaching completion in mid-August of 2003. It features the broadway-esque voice of Clay Stiles (as well as bass and synth instrumentation), Jayson Sullivan and Marc Hummel on trumpet, Jeff Blomquist on Alto Saxophone, and Tom Leslie on drums. Dave Campbell made a brief baritone sax contribution to the album, and Anne McCarthy is now our full-time synth player. "The Hoax" crosses through many different genres, tempos, and song-writing styles. One of its many strenghts is its inability to fit under one genre or any set of musical influences. It's a royal smorgasboard with an appetizer of ska, the main course serving up delicious jazz dumplings, and an icy layer of rock for dessert.
