Immediately after remixing Bob Marley for Island / Tuff Gong / Axiom for a "new" dub electronic release (Sept. 26, 1997) and performing a similar task on Miles Davis for Sony / Columbia for a dub-oriented instrumental release (Winter '98), Laswell went into his new Orange, NJ studio to produce "Sacred System: Chapter Two," his 2nd release for ROIR.

With the sounds of Marley and Miles still ringing in his ears, he brought jazz cornetist Graham Haynes, master guitarist Nicky Skopelitis, ace world percussionist Bill Buchen and Jamaican drumming legend Style Scott into the studio to create a new Laswell World Sound - a mixture of Arabic, Indian and Bitches Brew jazz - but Laswell NEW.
Musicians: Bill Laswell - Bass, EFX, Producer.
Graham Haynes - Cornet, Flugelhorn, EFX (Haynes just came out with his 3rd Antilles-Verve jazz release "Tunes for the 21st Century," of which CMJ said "a cascade of global space jazz." Haynes is one of the exploding group of young Turks on the contemporary music scene).
Nicky Skopelitis - Coral Sitar, 6 and 12 String Guitars (Skopelitis is a regular on Laswell productions since 1982, including Material and Golden Palominos. A master of the rock/jazz/world guitar, he has his own records out on Virgin and has a legion of followers among guitar musicians and fanatics).
Bill Buchen - Tablas, Log Drum, Parabolic Gamelan, Water Drums (Preeminent class-A world musician, trained with Ustad Kadar Khan).
Style Scott - Additional Beats (Reggae-famous drummer for Roots Radics, Dub Syndicate).

Executive Liaison for ROIR: Skiz Fernando of WordSound I Powa.

FROM AMG:
On Sacred System: Chapter Two, bassist and producer extraordinaire Bill Laswell makes good on the partly unfulfilled promise of 1996's Sacred System Chapter One: Book of Entrance. The difference, in this case, is a small ensemble of guest musicians who include Material guitarist Nicky Skopelitis, a tabla virtuoso named Bill Buchen, and jazz cornettist Graham Haynes (son of legendary bop drummer Roy Haynes). Whereas Chapter One was a rather arid solo project, Chapter Two comes completely to life with the various contributions of its ensemble players: Skopelitis mostly lays back and contributes lovely textures, while Haynes defines cavernous aural spaces with his echoey, jazzy horn lines and Buchen delivers almost impossibly intricate percussion figures. Laswell himself seems more energized, as well, and his bass lines sound deeper, heavier, happier. This is a deeply satisfying compilation of groove music from one of groove's greatest living exponents. - Rick Anderson
