The Eight House: Riding with Pluto is the first solo work by saxophonist and clarinetist Wendell Harrison. Wendell is known for his work with the seminal Detroit group The Tribe. The Tribe represented black self-actualization in the 1970s, at a time when Detroit desperately needed it. The Eighth House references that work. Harrison weaves in and out of first take free improvisations with fluency and skill on the clarinet and tenor saxophone. He is joined on three tracks by percussionist Juma Santos. Santos is best known for his work on Miles Davis' Bitches Brew album, as well as some great work on the Wildflowers compilations, with Marion Brown, and Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre. Highlights on this disc include the haunting "Dirge for Harold McKinney," recorded on the night of the influential pianist's death; and the first appearance of Wendell's composition for tenor, "Jazz on the Run."
