The music captured on this live recording allows us a chance to hear a band in the moment. A chance to hear highly skilled artists creating extended improvisations that can only come from the inspiration of a live audience. It is this inspiration that makes this record an excellent introduction to The Mark Lomax Quintet! Mark Lomax, II, formerly of the Marlon Jordan Quintet, has a free and exciting style of drumming that pushes and prods his sidemen to great heights! Having just come off the road with Marlon Jordan as well as playing engagements with trumpeter Clark Terry, and Wynton Marsalis sideman Wessel "Warmdaddy" Anderson, Lomax has brought his truly personal sound back to the leadership position. Sharing the bandstand is his most capable squad of musical masters. Manning the trumpet is Ansyn Banks, a graduate of David Baker's program at Indiana University. Stephen Lomax on the alto and tenor is one of the most promising young saxophonists in his generation. Hamilton Hardin is a student at Ohio State University and is working to find his own voice in the music. Manuel Quintero is a classically trained bassist from Capital University. He definitely holds down the bottom on this record! If you don' t have The Mark Lomax Quintet: Live at the 501 yet, then you're missing out on some great music.
