David Slusser - leader, composer, saxophones David Slusser was born in Akron, Ohio in 1952. He began playing tenor saxophone at age 10, around the same time he started experimenting with reel to reel tape recorders. Getting his first film sound job in 1975, he continued his career with a move to the San Francisco Bay area in 1977, where he joined Lucasfilm in 1984, and received an Emmy award for sound editing in 1993. He has worked often as a music editor for directors Francis Coppola, George Lucas and David Lynch, with whom he has co-composed music for his films. On his own he has composed for documentaries and public radio, as well as his jazz group Rubber City. His sound design is in the collections of both the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, though far more people have heard it in some of the more imaginative commercials on television. He began an ongoing association with composer John Zorn in the mid eighties that has led to national and international exposure, including the 1996 Saafelden Jazz Festival in Austria, where he performed with Mike Patton and Han Bennink. Slusser received two prizes in the 1999 Julius Hemphill Composition Awards, including first Prize for jazz orchestra. He has worked at Pixar Animation studios since the late nineties. Ralph Carney - saxophones Ralph Carney was born in Akron, Ohio in 1956. He's been a sideman of choice for everyone from Tom Waits to the B-52s; from Courtney Love and Jonathan Richman to Lavay Smith and the Blue Room Boys. His longtime association with Waits speaks volumes, and is on volumes of recordings, showcasing his amazing musicianship. Ralph has produced two CDs of his own unique music, where he plays all the parts on a vast array of instruments he has collected. In the summer of 2001, Ralph was selected to participate in the Sundance Film Composers Lab. Heard most recently with Oranj Symphonette and Les Claypool's Frog Brigade, Ralph is currently working on soundtracks for television and internet animation. Chris Ackerman - Drums Chris has been playing professionally for almost 40 years. He's accomplished in a wide variety of styles, including rock, blues, swing, be-bop, dixieland, and country, but his favorite idiom is free collective improvisation. He has performed on radio, television, and film. Originally from Ohio, he has lived in the bay area since 1977 and has performed with such local artists as: Mal Sharpe, Ralph Carney, David Slusser, Rova Saxophone Quartet, Henry Kaiser, Miles Boysen, Benny Green, Len Paterson, Vince Wallace, Mark Little, and Jessica Williams. His playing is featured in the soundtrack of David Lynch's "Wild at Heart" and "Fire Walk With Me", as well as John Zorn's tribute to Dave Brubeck, "In His Own Sweet Way". Richard Saunders - Bass Currently on the faculty at the SF Community Music Center, Richard started on washtub bass 35 years ago and has progressed through all electric and acoustic versions of his ax to his distinguished position in Bay Area music. Along the way he has played with Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Eddie Henderson, Jessica Williams, Dan Hicks, Country Joe & the Fish, The Pickle Family Circus, SF Mime Troupe, and the SF Klezmer Experience as well as playing sessions in radio, TV and film.
