All Genres > Jazz > Free Jazz > 4 WEST FEATURING : COLANGELO, CLATWORTHY, PAXSON, CALOGERO: Blue Coast Tenor-saxophonist Benn Clatworthy, long a fixture in Los Angeles area clubs, plays in a style influenced by John Coltrane but with his own fresh ideas. For this project, Clatworthy (who doubles on flute) is teamed with baritonist Pablo Calogero (a hard-charging player), bassist Chris Colangelo and drummer Jim Paxson for nine originals by band members. The playing of the musicians is on a very high level, which is fortunate given the sparse setting. The two saxophonists show plenty of personality in their solos, blend together well and are driven by the stimulating rhythm section. The music is modern postbop, hinting at the past while driving towards the future. Overall this well-recorded set is one of Benn Clatworthy's strongest sessions, and serves as an excellent opportunity to discover the playing of Pablo Calogero.
