Stars and Garters is dedicated to performing the hits from the Tin Pan Alley era. We play sing-along, clap-along, toe-tapping music including very familiar songs and very obscure novelty tunes. Ted Turner--band leader, banjo, vocals--Growing up singing songs around the piano at home, Ted first stepped on stage at about the age of 6. Ted applied his classical voice and piano studies at Jordan College of Music to his folk groups in the early-60's, rock bands in the late-60's, toured internationally with "Up With People" for two years, produced music for Special Services in Viet Nam, and played lead-banjo for "Your Father's Mustache" in Denver and New York City as part of the natural progression to become a high-tech engineer. "The 'Stars and Garters' is great stress relief from engineering and is always fun to present to our appreciative audiences." Mark W.--tuba--After years of piano lessons, Mark's parents finally realized that he was not going to be a concert pianist and suggested he play low brass in the high school band and pursue an engineering degree in college. Lifelong interest in Dixieland music eventually led Mark to pick up the tuba. So as a hobby, Mark now plays "heavy metal" for the Stars and Garters. Kevin Wible--trombone, vocals--After a year of violin, Kevin rebelled and took up the trombone in 1967, premised solely on his observation that the instrument had only one moving part. "How hard could it possibly be?" Tutored in classical performance by John Bart, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra bass trombonist, Kevin squandered his talents playing in pep bands for senatorial and presidential campaigns, World Team Tennis tournaments, pit orchestras, hay wagons, and a public Men's room. With the Purdue University's jazz band, Kevin played in Chicago's Kool Jazz Fest, the Notre Dame Jazz Fest, and the Montreaux Jazz Fest in Switzerland. Kevin first learned most of the older songs as a child listening to Mom and Dad sing during long car trips. He has since learned the correct lyrics, and enjoys learning new old standards from the late 1800's through the 1950's. Glen Leinbach--trumpet, vocals, miscellaneous percussion--Glen started playing his grandfather's circa 1890 cornet in fifth grade and has played on and off since. Music was always present in his house while growing up, since his dad was a tenor soloist, his mom played piano. His grandmother accompanied silent movies on piano in the movie theater in Sioux City, Iowa. Always a ham, Glen's first recording was a 78rpm recording of his rendition of "Davy Crocket", recorded at age 4. Glen also enjoys "serious" music singing with the Larimer Chorale, along with many other active and artistic hobbies.
