CAROLYN SYKES, harpist, was born in Melbourne Australia and in 1976, while still in high school, TOURED EUROPE AND ASIA with the Melbourne Youth Orchestra. Upon returning, she helped found Melbourne's Parkville Music School for children. After moving to Sydney in 1980 she TOURED AUSTRALIA performing as a soloist and with the Latin American all women group Amaranta.

She WON AWARDS at the 1986 and 1988 International Jazz and Pop Harp Competitions in Boston, and as a result received a full scholarship to the University of Arizona, where she studied with Carrol McLaughlin (harp) and Jeff Haskel (jazz). In 1990, she recorded her first CD, Tinges of Colour, for voice and harp. She HAS APPEARED in the Williamstown Theatre Festival (Massachusetts), the Soka City International Harp Festival (Japan), Jazz in July (Massachusetts), and at the University of Nagoya (Japan). She has also worked in the Shoji Tabuchi Show (Branson, Missouri), where she wrote arrangements for his band. For the past several years, she has performed as SOLOIST for the Distinguished Speakers Series at the Pasadena (CA) Civic Auditorium.

Ms. Sykes was awarded the prestigious HARPO MARX SCHOLARSHIP while studying with Susan Allen at the California Institute of the Arts, where she received her Master's degree in harp performance. She has her own private teaching studio, Pacific Harps, and is adjunct harp professor at Mount St. Mary's College. She is President of the Los Angeles chapter of the American Harp Society. Her recent activities include RESEARCH in Central Australia with Australian Aboriginal women and their songs, performances in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (Scotland), appearances at the New Music Festival of Los Angeles and the Green Umbrella Concert Series, performing for the Long Beach Opera Company, the Torrance Symphony and Judy Collins, the West Hollywood Orchestra, Charlie Haden's Liberation Orchestra (jazz) and ongoing session work for television and film soundtracks. During summer 2005, Ms. Sykes played well-received concerts at the London Festival, and in Dublin and Kilkenny, Ireland.
