This club recording, belatedly Gannon's first under his own name, is a spirited, mainstream/hard-bop effort with pianist Miles Black, bassist Miles Hill and drummer Blaine Wikjord that displays his considerable skill as a soloist in the Wes Montgomery tradition -- earthy, swinging and melodically inventive. (You'd also swear that he has been listening to Montreal's Sonny Greenwich.) Gannon likes to keep things simple on the bandstand -- why reinvent the wheel when the ride's already smooth? -- and he gives Black plenty of room to rollick.
