The music of Buselli is a fresh breeze of flowing rhythms done with a delightful flair. Presented in duets through septets, the playing projects a lighthearted spirit and a cheerfulness. Buselli wrote the majority of the tunes for this date, his first recording. With the addition of some lovely standards, he has made an album full of spry tunes and perky beats. Buselli plays both the flugelhorn and trumpet, although he reverts more often to the fatter sound of the flugelhorn. It is his horn of preference on all four duet pieces he does with pianist Sifferlen. The two mainly stay within the guardrails on either the standard or original duet selections, yet they present the music with the same uplifting spirit that has punctuated so much of Art Farmer's work. On the larger group performances,which also are played within the boundaries of the changes, Buselli and the band typically swing. Although these groups use varying personnel,the rhythm section of pianist Friedman, bassist Conly, and drummer Keeler remains constant. Friedman alternates with Buselli as a soloist, but her main role seems to be supportive rather than costarring. On two selections, Buselli includes a guitar in the instrumental mix. The blues-based "The Trouble With Triplets" takes on a different character that does not have the same joyousness as the opther selections. They quickly revert, though, to that playful feeling with the following tune to reestablish the format. Buselli is a fine musician who can play, write, arrange, and lead. He sets a definite pattern with this first album, yet he also shows on the final tune a small part of a spirit that can branch off and wander along a more unfamiliar path.
