In addition to leading active performing careers, each member of the group shares his passion for music in the educational arena: Bill Sears at the Interlochen Arts Academy; Brent Wallarab and Lennie Foy at DePauw University; Luke Gillespie at Indiana University; Bob Ferrazza at the Oberlin Conservatory; Nick Schneider at Oakton, IL., Community College and Steve Zenz in the Slinger, WI. Public schools. In their moniker, the "Arts Center" refers to the Indianhead Arts and Education Center in Shell Lake, WI. where the members of the ACJC form the faculty for a jazz combo camp each summer. A few words about the music on this CD... Ernie's Romp, a playful shuffle reminiscent of the spirit of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers introduces the listener to all of the soloists in the group. The Green Bean Girl is a waltz combining some unusual chord movements Bob has been working with along with more traditional harmonic motion. Each Waking Moment is written for Brent's wife and soul mate, Gina. The haunting and introspective melody is based on the chord changes to "Alone Together". With One Accord is a 32 bar modal tune in four sections. The spirit of the ACJC is captured in the title as we are seven individuals from seven locations who have come together with the sole purpose of creating great music. DaNaBar was written twenty years ago and is dedicated to David Nathaniel Baker, Luke's first jazz teacher and mentor. This beautiful waltz features an extended unaccompanied piano solo which utilizes metric modulations. A common Italian phrase for "sweet dreams", Sogni D'Oro is a bossa nova with an unusual phrase length. Bob penned this tune for his wife Martha. The most elaborately orchestrated composition on the CD, Isabelle, is a powerful Latin tune with the solo section alternating between swing and Latin. So Perfect is a ballad which develops one motif throughout a 20 measure form. This tune is written for Bob's daughter, Allesandra. The melodic material for the closing selection, Triple Double, is crafted out of the musical device known as triad pairs-hence the title. This funky and energetic tune is a 16 bar modified blues which affords the soloists ample opportunity to stretch out. The ACJC is available for concerts, clinics and workshops.
