Eartha Holley has been active in the Arts in a variety of media. Although he has recorded as an instrumentalist and in vocal groups, this marks his production debut. Holley says, “Being an English professor, I’ve always appreciated a well written lyric almost as much as the musical groove, sometimes even more.”
His CD, The Professor Raps is old-school, message music, the music reminicient of classic Motown grooves, cool jazz riffs, and his days growing up near Detroit. “There’s something about those old beats that much of Hip-Hop is missing.” But with the popularity of Neo-Soul, Holley admits that the sound is coming around again. When asked about doing an album of “message rap” and storytelling, “To me, message rap is rap. That was one of its original forms. I love artist like The Last Poets, Gil Scot-Heron, and Public Enemy who had something positive and provocative to say.
The Professor Raps is his very personal statement, each track written, produced and performed by Holley.
