"On the exclusive rap tip, the Trybesmen still remain the strongest contenders for glory, never letting up on the flavor that has made them popular...The creativity of the instrumentals (which are produced by Eldee) and the rendition of vocals Afro-style is so amazing and is definitely what puts the Trybesmen ahead of any of their kind in the (Nigerian) music industry..." Owope, Yomi. "A Nation's Hip Hop Dream." This Day Newspaper 27 June. 2002

L.A.G Style is the debut album of Nigeria's premiere rap group the Trybesmen. Made up of Eldee (Lanre Dabiri), Kaboom(Kunle Bello) and Freestyle(Mfon Essien), the Trybesmen came on the Nigerian hip hop scene in 1999 with unquestionable talent and immense lyrical skill.

The Trybesmen are three young men who use music to show that the beauty of our global village can be vividly expressed through music. When they released L.A.G Style in 1999 they simply said they desired to have fun. The album is fun, but it is also a landmark album, it became the highest selling indigenous rap album in Nigeria, selling over 50,000 copies the highest for any Nigerian hip hop group. 'Shake Bodi' the single released with the album is currently the second most requested indigenous rap song on Nigerian radio, the most requested song is 'Plenty Nonsense" a single the Trybesmen released early this year.

Whether the world at large will feel the phenomenon that is the Trybesmen is anybody's guess, but one thing is certain, even if they never release another album they will forever be remembered as the most innovative and talented rappers to come out of Africa's most populous nation. They are already called the Run DMC of African hip hop.

These men have also shown they are dedicated to their music. Not only do they write and produce every word and beat on their album, they started Tryberecords to cater for their music and the music of other talented Nigerian rappers (www.tryberecords.com),that let's us all know that they are far from finished creating innovative music.

As pioneers it is hard to place the sound of Trybesmen, but for want of better comparisons it is safe to say their sound is Jay Z meets Busta Rhymes meets Guru with the rhythm of Fela Kuti. This description only goes as far as style, there is not yet a well defined category to place their music.....do we call it Afro hip hop, African Rap or World hip hop?

The true talent of the Trybesmen is in their multi-lingual lyrics. Their ability to spit out tongue twisting rhymes in Nigerian Pidgin English, Yoruba, Hausa, Ibo and English is quite astounding. Perhaps even more astounding is their ability to cushion the lyrics with beats that do not alienate the listener, so whether or not you understand what they say, the music gets you. It's the same feeling you get when you listen to Germany's Die Fantastischen Vier, or France's MC Solaar.

The group intends to release a self titled album this year, building on the immense success of their 2001 single 'Plenty Nonsense'
