Karen Elizabeth Hylton " All things are Possible to them that Believe." Mark 9:23 A native St. Louisan, Miss Hylton is a graduate of the University City Public Schools. In 1980, she graduated from the University City High School where she was active in the school's drama productions and music department. During her high school years, she was awarded a voice merit scholarship to study at the St. Louis Conservatory and School for the Arts (CASA). Karen began her music journey at a young age with piano and flute lessons and singing in the gospel choir at Centennial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She grew up learning to appreciate and love diverse genres of music through the encouragement of parents Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Samuel W. Hylton, Jr. In 1980, Karen was awarded a voice scholarship to attend Culver-Stockton College, Canton, Missouri where she received her Bachelors of Arts degree in Journalism and English in 1984. In 1987, she received the Master of Arts degree in Media Communications from Webster University, St. Louis, Mo. A Lyric soprano, Karen has studied voice at Washington University and Webster University respectively. Her repertoire includes gospel, classical, spirituals, sacred and jazz music. Karen shares her musical gifts at many churches, community and civic programs and events locally and nationally. Karen was a featured soloist with Dello Thedford and the Gospel Symphonic choir's first and second live recordings in St. Louis. She has also recorded with the St. Louis/East St. Louis Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America and was soloist in the 1993 recording of Joseph Price and the J.P. Singers live recording of the Story of Jesus. Karen has performed for gospel great Richard Smallwood in Washington D. C. and with national recording artist Earth, Wind and Fire during their Touch the World tour in St. Louis at the Fox Theater. Karen's work in the theatre is diverse. In November of 1997, she preformed with jazz great Neal Tate in a Jazz Oratorio: A Work in Progress sponsored by the St. Louis Black Repertory Company. Karen has been a cast member in the following St. Louis Black Repertory Company productions: Black Nativity, Tambourines to Glory, The Gospel at Colonus, Eubie and Bubblin' Brown Sugar. Karen is a member of the St. Louis Symphony's In Unison Chorus where she has been a featured soloist at the annual Gospel Christmas with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra at Powel Symphony Hall. In January of 1998, Karen performed with the In Unison Chorus at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Robert Ray. She has also performed several recitals at St. Louis churches in conjunction with the In Unison's local artists series. She has performed for opera legend Grace Bumbry and was in concert with Mezzo Soprano Marietta Simpson. On September 18, 2004, Karen released her first CD entitled " Here's One."
