Biography

Mike is no stranger to the either the stage or the recording studio. Having crossed the continent numerous times to perform for audiences both small and large, he is well-versed in entertaining the troops.

That was back in the late seventies and early eighties. The duo Salmond and Mulder found themselves in demand in certain circles, such as the American Lutheran Church, where its large national youth constituency would gather at stadiums around the U.S. every four years. On several occasions Salmond and Mulder were the main music of such events, which would then spin-off to numerous regional bookings.

Four albums came out of that seven year stint with two coming from the Image VII label, an offshoot of Word Records of Canada.

Salmond and Mulder were known for their live performances as well as their catchy songs, which happened to find their way to diverse venues: The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Gary Chapman’s Friday night musical variety show in Nashville, the Mennonite Herald Hymn book, which suggest their songs’ diverse appeal.

After touring for seven years Mike decided enough was enough; to him the concerts had become cliche, the songs repetitious and boring. Calling it quits to life on the road, Mike dabbled in various business ventures in an effort to find something that interested him. Among other things he went back to school for his Masters of Arts Degree in English Literature.

Human Nature is Mike’s debut CD as a solo artist. The songs represent a wide range of themes and form a sort of testament to Mike’s pet ideas: the struggle for manhood (Streams of Shiloah), egomaniacs (Human Nature), the spiritual journey (Looking for the Sun). Mike is a singer/songwriter/guitarist with a wide range of influences - Dylan, Bono, Van Morrison, Don Henley. His stylings are diverse and move from full out band on Eyes of Charity to single guitar and vocal on New Orleans Tonight.

Mike describes himself this way: “it was in 2001 when I picked up my guitar after a long break from music. As I began to sing again and play again, the song ideas came from somewhere deeper than before. Writing began to feel raw and exciting, as well as exactly the way I felt about the things that mattered to me, and with that came a burning desire to share my music with others. I knew that I had crossed over to a new artistic frontier, one in which art and life make a true connection.”
