Mick Sterling has been a fixture on the Minneapolis music scene for nearly 20 years. As the leader of the influential 10 piece Soul and R&B band Mick Sterling and the Stud Brothers, Mick Sterling and his band changed the face of the Twin Cities club scene. Throughout the nearly 17 year run of the band, Mick Sterling wrote and recorded original music that was unlike any other "horn" band in the region.
With influences ranging from Springsteen, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Elton John, Tom Waits, Otis Redding and James Brown, Sterling's took all those influences and combined his passionate and soulful vocal style and heartfelt and surprisingly introspective lyrics toproduce 5 original CD's as well as some powerfully soulful live CD's. While Sterling achieved considerable regional success and provided his large band with hundreds of dates per year, he felt it was time for a change.

The change actually began in 1999 when Sterling contacted singer-songwriter-producer Kevin Bowe (Jonny Lang, Delbert McClinton, Etta James, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and many others) to begin work on his 1999 release THE BEST LAID PLANS. It was during this process that Kevin and Mick collaborated on two songs, SOUL OF A WOMAN and SOMEONE'S WAITING FOR ME AT HOME. The songs were two of the strongest of Sterling's career and marked a dramatic departure of song style from Sterling's previous releases. Those songs were the catlyst for Sterling and Bowe's latest release in 2005, BETWEEN SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY MORNING.

This new release is truly a concept record. The premise of the record is this; how do you deal on Sunday morning for the things you do on Saturday night? While it's not the typical "faith based" record, BETWEEN SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY MORNING is filled with spritual messages about the little inconsequential things like Sin, Salvation, Temptation, Greed, Redmeption, Love and Hate, just to name a few. Each song is character driven and tells a great tale. With songs like MAN PANTS, WHO DIED AND MADE YOU KING and DIVINE MISS GUIDANCE, Sterling and Bowe show some biting commentary on people who complain too much and people who are too big for their britches. On songs like HEAVY LIFTING, THE SKIES OF AVALON, LUCKY MAN, THE BIBLICAL SENSE, MAGGIES ROSARY and the Richie Havens song FOLLOW, Sterling and Bowe give the record it's emotional and optimistic core. The title song of the CD perfectly sums up the content of the CD on BETWEEN SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY MORNING, You're too late for Saturday Night, too early for Sunday Morning, you better heed the good lords warning and find your way home, you ain't drunk, but you ain't sober, the day ain't come but the night is over, you better get right with God, and save your soul."

BETWEEN SATURDAY NIGHT is filled with 9 songs written by Bowe and Sterling, one by Sterling and Bruce McCabe (Jonny Lang's LIE TO ME and STILL RAININ') and one song by Bowe (The Skies of Avalon). The record is a combination of Blues, Soul, Gospel, Americana and straight ahead Blues Rock. Sterling takes all of his experiences of living the life of a singer in a club band and transfers this to a musical template unlike any he has recorded. BETWEEN SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY MORNING is a throwback to when you had to listen to the WHOLE record instead of one or two songs. Each song fits with the other.

In 2005, Mick Sterling has a new CD, written his first book, THE LONG RIDE HOME (A life in the Minnesota Music Scene) with Crotalus Publishing, and finishing work on his first film as Producer and featured artist in BUNKERS: An American Music Story. With this kind of momentum, Mick Sterling is sure to achieve much more in 2006 and beyond.
