Summer Debut of Newcomer’s Gospel-Jazz CD:

Genesis by Joseph Edwards

June 5, 2006. Upper Marlboro, MD. In Genesis you will be delighted by the familiar, yet fresh, gospel-jazz renditions of 17-year old saxophonist Joseph Edwards. Featuring the vibrant accompaniment of Phillip Carter, musician and music director (Mt. Ephraim Baptist Church, Sounds of Victory, and Children of the Gospel), and a jazzy version of “Lord, Help Me to Hold Out” with saxophonist Brian Lenair, this CD showcases the musicians’ affinity for the jazz-funk influence. From hymns with a “2006” twist, to gospel favorites, all of the selections are presented instrumentally―ranging from the reverent “How Great Thou Art” to an expressive and foot-stomping version of “I’ve Got a Feeling.”

Listeners will quickly recognize that Joseph is ultra comfortable blowing his horns―soprano and alto saxophones―with heart and soul. He not only makes a surprisingly solid start with this release, but demonstrates that valuable contemporary skill of multitasking. Last week Joseph graduated with Honors from DeMatha Catholic High School, where he received instruction from saxophonist Chris Vadala and was a band member, most recently in the wind and jazz ensembles. During his senior year he competed for and won a Washington Post Music and Dance Scholarship Award. Joseph will attend the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) as a Sondheim Public Affairs Scholar. When asked about his future goals, Joseph said, “I want to continue playing music for the rest of my life. On a daily basis, I would like to help people while working in government.”

The influence of many role models, along with Joseph’s dedication, has yielded positive results. About Joseph, Brian Lenair said, “He’s an up and coming young lion that is a force to be reckoned with.” Genesis was produced and arranged by Phillip Carter, a mentor to Joseph and hundreds of youth in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, and Joseph’s former music director at First Baptist Church of North Brentwood.
