Gary Mayes & Nu Era
Go Tell It: The N.E. X-Perience Vol. II

Gary Mayes & Nu Era are back, followup up on their startling debut (see album review) with Christmas songs, and again insert them into an urban environment, with production finess from both Mayes and The Knuckleheads team.
As an instrumentalist, producer and songwriter, Mayes has a knack of surrounding himself with astounding vocal talent.
On this disk, there's not only the array of Nu Era vocalist, but also special guests such as Kim Burrell, Nikita Clegg, Gene Moore Jr. and Shawn McLemore.
Burrell appears on the hyper-kinetic "Go Tell It". With a flurry of rhythms all over the cut, Burrell sings, scats, thrills and in every other way puts her one-of-a-kind vocal stamp on it. Then the hidden track remix of the song has Mayes bringing the choir back in to modulate and increase the hype, as Burrell explodes with torrents of jazzed interpretations. The cut then beautifully disintegrates into a powerful display of individual band member talents.
The Houston crew put their spin on classics such as the smooth groove "Silent Night" that has Mayes stepping in with frequent choir instructions, and "All Ye Faithful", which begins quietly before erupting into a blast of vocal power and instrumental glory.
"Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" also gets an uptempo Gospel makeover, as does "This Christmas".
Nikita Clegg steps into "Don't Forget The Baby", and makes it one of the project's high points. The Kurt Carr Singer pours heart and soul into her plea to remember Christ at Christmas. The song modulates again and again, with Nu Era providing plenty of oomph.
On "All Hail To The King", fellow Texan Shawn McClemore offers guest vocals. Z. Glenn Piper writes this funky, rhythm-driven number and McLemore complements with his praise, making everyone realize how much he has been missed of late.
The two-part song "Jesus My Everything" begins with Gene Moore Jr.'s sparkilngly smooth vocals over Piper's piano work. The second half of the cut is sweetened with Nu Era's mass power, strings, drums and some great acoustic guitar licks courtesy John Calderon.
Also on the project, and recalling his debut, Mayes drops a remix of "We Worship Thee", as well as new 'dangerously in love' mix of "My Love 4 You".
Certainly the most urban of this year's Christmas offerings, Gary Mayes & Nu Era make their mark. And remember, don't forget to hunt for those hidden tracks!
