From a young age, Thena Dare had a need to express herself to the world- and not without reason. At three and a half, she experienced the unimaginable, witnessing the death of her older sister. As Thena grew up, the pain would stay with her, moulding her into an alternately introspective and expressive person. Because she had lost someone she loved so much, she felt an enormous burden to make her life meaningful; to have a voice, and to be heard. As Thena grew, she would begin to find that voice in music. At the age of six, her parents bought her a small electric keyboard for Christmas. In no time, she was plunking out melodies and singing along. She found a place of safety and comfort in the time she spent playing; and she was hooked. After years of studying piano, at fifteen, Thena fell in love with the acoustic guitar and began to write and play her own songs. It has been her principal accompaniment ever since. Following her discovery of her love for song-writing, Thena spent a decade in pursuit of her own musical growth and expression as a singer and performer. That pursuit took her and her van, packed will all her belongings, all the way to Tennessee to join a band with some friends. The band never got off the ground, but its failure acted as the catalyst for Thena to truly come into her own as a solo artist. During the three years Thena spent in Tennessee, she worked as a shoe sales-person by day, and played her heart out to whoever would listen, by night. Making regular appearances at the local bars and coffee shops, festivals, fundraisers, and television and radio stations, Thena was able to build up a steady local following of devoted fans. And with her first self-produced album of all-original material to support her, she was able to garner interest from the music industry early on in her artistic career. After deciding to move to Los Angeles to continue her musical growth, Thena entered the prestigious Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California, to study jazz. During her time there, Thena released her second album, showcasing her phenomenal growth and musicianship. After graduating from the program in 2003, Thena's style made a metamorphis into what she likes to call "folk-jazz" : a blend of her own acoustic sound, with the chordal language and improvisational elements of jazz. Over the past several years, Thena has become involved in yet another venture, working with 12th Hour Entertainment and manager Lindsay Rielly. Along with a record label division, 12th Hour produces feature films, television shows, and large scale events. As a result of this partnership, Thena has been able to place songs on several upcoming major feature films, as well as television shows. In addition, Thena has shown that she has truly come into her own and an artist, with her recently released third CD, entitled "Under the Radar." Building a life In L.A., Thena now continues to make her mark on the music scene, touching people on a deep level whenever and wherever she performs. Her warm personality brings a level of confidence and grace to the stage that is found in the most competent of professionals. And in her thought-provoking lyrics, she articulates her experiences and convictions with poetry, drama, and maturity. And because of much of the pain of her past, she continues question things through her songs. Thena is one artist who has been shaped by these things. As a result, she has a rare, sublime gift of selfless expression that makes her music accessible to myriads of people. To listen to Thena's music is to embark on her life's journey, and to see that every day of life is a gift that we live.
