MUSIC IS MY SILENCE (RabbleRouser Music 2005 RROO1) "so brilliant, so moving." Annie Lennox "a highly original and thoughtful record...impressive." www.manchestermusic.co.uk "a commanding and defiant set of thoroughly contemporary-sounding songs" www.netrhythms.co.uk Singer-songwriter Belinda O'Hooley hails from a small village in the North of England. Though Yorkshire born and bred, Belinda comes from a long line of musicians originating in Ireland. Her cousin, Colm O'Donnell leads the successful Border Collie Band and another cousin, Tommy Fleming has mapped out a successful solo singing career since leaving Irish super-group De Danaan. Having previously performed alongside Tommy Fleming, Belinda now lends her song writing and piano skills to Rachel Unthank & The Winterset who's critically acclaimed debut album 'Cruel Sister' was released in May. (****MOJO, August 2005) Now it's Belinda's turn with her debut album of self-penned songs titled 'Music Is My Silence' Her startlingly original, deeply moving stories combine haunting lyrics with rich piano soundscapes. An accomplished musician, Belinda draws from folk, indie and classical influences to create music described as 'gloriously commanding'. Belinda's music is hard to categorise, but some of her influences include Sandy Denny, PJ Harvey, Elliot Smith and Joni Mitchell. Music Is My Silence is a collection of intimate and atmospheric stories featuring Belinda on piano and vocals with contributions from world class musicians including trumpet player Steve Waterman (Jazz Musician of the Year 2003) and Sarah Allen (Flook) on Flute. Track 3 - Moon Over Water - highlights the struggle between tourism and those people that live and work in a beautiful place. In this song; it is the Isle of Mull, Scotland. It features Rachel Unthank on cello and Jayne Coyle on viola. Track 4 - Izuko, no more - explores the last few days in the life of Japanese music journalist Izuko as she struggles with depression through the emails she wrote to a friend. Steve Waterman on muted trumpet takes the song to a crescendo of noise, highlighting Izuko's turmoil. Track 8 - Afterglow - is a song of optimism for those who have lost someone. While the album has been under wraps until now, a copy was leaked to an Irish publication, who made it their album of the month and wrote "...this fresh set of heart wrenching beauties has been a well kept secret to date...a highly impressive first album." GCN, Ireland The album was released Monday 13th June 2005 on RabbleRouser Records - a small independent record company with distribution by Cadiz. Belinda's UK tour to promote Music Is My Silence kicked off on June 20th with dates in Nottingham, Sheffield, Manchester, *Hebden Bridge, *Huddersfield, *Leeds, *Brighton, Cambridge and finishing off at London's 12 Bar Club. *SOLD OUT See www.belindaohooley.com for full listings Recent coverage has included BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour on June 16th where Belinda was interviewed by Jenny Murray and performed a live track from the album. Tracks from her album played on BBC Radio Shropshire, Wales, Leeds, Sheffield, and Nottingham Belinda's album has been nominated the Number 1 Album in DIVA magazine's August edition. Belinda's album is to be reviewed in MOJO magazine and Belinda to be featured in The Observer and Diva magazine in October. Belinda will be appearing on ITV's Calendar show on Friday 18th November playing an acoustic track from her album. By the way, Belinda has a wretched claim to fame that has left her both outwardly embarrassed and secretly proud... In 2001 she won 'Stars In Their Eyes' as Eurythmics diva Annie Lennox. Then Belinda's mother died. This marks a significant turning point in Belinda's life and career. She bought a piano and began to write. The result is 'Music Is My Silence'. This winter sees Belinda embarking on her second UK tour, with dates all around the country. Belinda is an incredible musician and her live shows make her simply one of the most exciting performers on the contemporary acoustic music scene.
