What happens when three heavy metal musicians disconnect the power to their amps & effects units, put down the electric instruments, and pick up acoustic instruments? You get 'Pause', the debut album from Tree of Shadows. 'Pause' is filled with both overt and subtle images, as the story of one man's quest for answers unfolds. 'Pause' combines the undertones of progressive rock and metal of such artists as Queensryche and Savatage with the grace and flow of European rock and folk styles, from Iron Maiden to Loreena McKennitt and Altan - hence: '16th Century Rock 'n' Roll'! Continuity is established by the poetic introductions to each chapter of 'Pause'. The songs then take the story further into the listeners' consciousness to lead them on a journey of self-discovery. Each song can either tie into each other to form a complete story or stand on its own. ABOUT TREE OF SHADOWS Tree of Shadows began as a side project between members of two heavy metal bands. Tree of Shadows was initially formed so the members could record a cover song to be included on a tribute album. However, deadlines and respective band schedules forced Tree of Shadows to withdraw from participating. Nevertheless, the core members of Tree of Shadows realized that they had something special forming. The three guys who formed the core of Tree of Shadows eventually became all of Tree of Shadows. They share a common musical interest besides metal: Celtic-style traditional/folk and classical music. They are also regular participants in the Michigan Renaissance Festival, one of many seasonal attractions throughout the United States that focuses on reenactments of medieval/Renaissance period Europe. At first, combining the two elements - Renaissance period history and heavy metal - seemed like an outrageous concept. Then, guitarist Johnny Red and singer Jeff Maxwell decided to tone down some of their metal songs and turn them into acoustic numbers. The plot thickened when guitarist/bassist Rome Ohnui began participating on a full-time basis. "Pause" was released on the independent, Detroit-area record label, Shadowlight Records. --------------- NEWS UPDATE (Aug. 2002) -- TREE OF SHADOWS has ceased operations following the departure of rhythm guitarist Ray Kozora and bassist Rome Ohnui late last year.
