Bob Phillips, Lively Times The fiddle is a medium of transport; Robison gets carried away to Scottish moors, pioneer parlors, and Tin Pan Alley. The material is far-ranging; the playing reflects Tom's respect for tradition. The opening set of Irish fiddle tunes shows the influence of past masters such as Michael Coleman, and more recent propopents wuch as Martin Hayes. Tom's background in swing and bluegrass comes to the fore in other tracks, such as "Temptation Rag" and "Tyin' a Knot in the Devil's Tail." Robison intersperses the intrumentals with vocals delivered in a storytelling style; "Tyin' a Knot" is a Western "stretcher", "Far Away in Australia" a tender love ballad, "Rocky Road to Dublin" a tale of a young man's high jinks. The closing vocal "Take Me Back to Old Montana", tells of a simpler, sweeter time when Montana was undeveloped. Tom has assistance here from very capable players, including Mike Videon and Richard Burke on guitars, Mick Cavanaugh on whistle, and Angie Leprohon on hammered dulcimer, vocals, and musical saw.
