The Alans are a quartet of men who are of an age that should know better [according to their wives]. They share a first name and an interest in old-fashioned Scottish and Irish traditional music. Performing at the Houston Folk Club [the scottish one!] a regular basis and playing at local venues [such as the Dean Park Hotel] has given these mature members of the folk fraternity a big push. The band flexed their musical muscles in entertaining the audience of the prestigious Danny Kyle Open Stage at the Celtic Connections Festival. The Alans perform an intoxicating mixture of Scottish and Irish tunes and songs, with melodies interchanged between the flute and mandolin, and verses and choruses passed between the singers. The band has now recorded a CD called - the Houston sessions - which is available on hand knitted music. It was recorded in Paisley's Blue Cat Recording Studio by Simon Sheppard and features an exciting mixture of traditional songs and tunes. The band members are: Alan H Jamieson-vocals & bodhran [from Renfrew], Alan King - guitar & vocals [from Paisley] Allan Y McDougall - mandolin & bouzouki & Allan Whiteford - flute & vocals [both from Neilston].
