Songs and sounds that come from the heart - this is the essence of Shir Balev, a Kansas City-based group whose unique musical styling and vocal harmonies provide a fresh approach to contemporary Jewish music.

Meet the Band: Linda Sweenie (composer, vocals, guitar, piano, percussion)

Originally from New York, Linda worked her way through
high school there, then through college in Chicago, singing and playing guitar at local clubs. After moving to Kansas City in 1996, she spent 5 years singing with the Kansas City Symphony Chorus. She currently serves as Music Director at Congregation Beth Torah in Overland Park, KS.

Glenn Philips (composer, piano, vocals, percussion)

Music has always played an important role in Glenn's life. Growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he played clarinet, saxophone and piano throughout high school and college. His interest in singing and composition began later when he became involved in the music program at Congregation Beth Torah. Today he is a key member of the choir there, a bass soloist and a respected composer-in-residence.

Randy Deutch (bass guitar, percussion)

A Kansas City native, Randy has been playing bass since he was fourteen. His early influences and the roots of his style were the British invasion groups of the 60's. He has played in various groups over the years, gravitating to original music bands with strong writers and vocalists. Randy's driving bass lines form the backbone of Shir Balev's unique sound.

Reviews...

...their debut CD features original compositions by Linda and Glenn. The selections range from upbeat to lyrical and are more sophisticated than usual "camp-folk" fare. Even more than the listening value are the new compositions "Glass Half Full" offers. I'm glad to have heard Shir Balev and can't wait to learn some of their new music

...I've given it a good listen (about 6 times now) and my first comment is Yasher Koach! Nice Job!
