Singer/songwriter, anti-folk guitar slinger from upstate NY, Sean Rowe definitely breaks the rules when it comes to the solo acoustic thing. As Don Wilcock from the Troy Record put it: "... When Rowe gets in front of a microphone, he is transformed into a wizened and grizzled old black griot. He summons up a voice from deep within that begs comparisons to such genre-bending innovators as funk-jazz master Gil Scott-Heron or the late beach bum turned philosopher Ted Hawkins ..." Chris Ladd from the Skidmore News raved about Sean's live performance at Skidmore College: "... It seems almost impossible that a performer so slight and Caucasian could produce sounds so bottomless and soulful ..." Metroland Magazine hailed Sean as the Best Solo Artist of 2004. This is what they had to say about his performances throughout the Capital District: "... Rowe has the uncanny ability in live performance to mimic a 3-piece band. Scan the crowd during the initial moments of his set, and you'll probably see a host of surprised looks, all wondering how a guy like Rowe can create a sound typically associated with grizzled blues wailers and Motown legends ..." For nearly a decade now, Rowe has been wowing audiences with his "to the teeth" style of soul music and ability to produce sounds larger than himself. Recently, Rowe's 2nd self-released solo record, "27", was met with critical acclaim from the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), who awarded him with an unrestricted $7,000 grant for his songwriting efforts. Skidmore College Radio offered these accolades about Rowe's latest record: "... 27 is a lightning bolt of ingenuity. I personally play Sean's music in between Ella, Roy Hargrove, and Nina Simone; between Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield, and Coltrane ..." [Arthur Gonick - WSPN-FM 91.1] These days Sean shares the stage with percussionist Marco Haber. Captivating the audience with a dynamic playing style that never fails to invite the question -- How on earth does he do that? -- Marco is in a class all to himself. The Rowe/Haber duo (formally known as 'The Sean Rowe Project')and now called 'MUDFUNK' is currently performing throughout NY State and beyond and is generating more and more interest all of the time.
