From the rhythmically strong "9th and Taylor" to the sweet melody of the title track, Melanie Leaf's debut CD Solid Ground is a collection of five of this artist's passionate and personal songs. A native Oregonian, Melanie grew up with a love for the land and the outdoors, a love that finds its way into her music today. Influenced by songs as old as the hills and musicians as modern as Indigo Girls, Melanie sings about the life she sees around her. Her love for the natural world drew her to work in the environmental field where she works as development coordinator for the river conservation group WaterWatch. She is active in the conservation community, working to protect wild desert landscapes and helping to ensure that Oregon has environmentally responsible leaders. Melanie started playing music at an early age, plunking out by ear the tunes her older brother played on the piano. After playing the piano throughout grade and middle school, Melanie picked up guitar during her senior year in high school thanks to a close guitar-playing friend. Her performances are "gatherings of friends," whether in front of audiences of five, fifty or five hundred. With crisp lyrics and melodies that "run around in your head all day," her music paints pictures that are as clear as the voice that carries the song.
