Hailed as "the greatest unknown goddess of country music" by the Gavin radio trade magazine, Joy Lynn White is one of the rare treasures to emerge from Nashville in recent memory. Initially turning heads with her awesome set of pipes as she forged the new assertive mode for modern female country singers, White has since blossomed into a superior songwriter, evocative performer, and naturally gifted actress. Driven by her muse rather than any career considerations, she is the real deal: a roots music singer and songwriter with heart, smarts, and hard-won wisdom and integrity. White is one of the best-kept secrets in American music, at least for now, but her talents can be impressively measured by the creative company she keeps. In addition to releasing three critically acclaimed albums of her own, she has sung on records with Lucinda Williams, Dwight Yoakam, Randy Travis, The Mavericks, Iris DeMent, Buddy Miller, Kim Richey and Robbie Fulks, among many others. Her friend Williams has invited White to open her shows and join her on stage, and she has toured Europe with such esteemed artists as Americana hero Miller and legendary songwriter Chip Taylor. The rising country-rock band Pinmonkey recorded two of her songs on their debut CD, and White recently played country matriarch Maybelle Carter in a theater production celebrating the music and story of the legendary Carter family. From her first emergence in the early 1990's, White has been lauded as a very special musical quantity. Born in Arkansas and raised in Indiana, White started singing in public at five years old. Blessed with a voice that displays what USA Today calls "an emotional range beyond anything in mainstream country," she headed to Nashville after finishing high school in a beat-up old car with a mere $200 in her pocket. She quickly became one of Music City's most in-demand demo singers before winning a record deal with Columbia Records. She released what Country Weekly praises as "two brilliant albums" on Columbia: 1992's Between Midnight & Hindsight (recently re-released on Sony/Lucky Dog Records) and 1994's Wild Love. The discs broke the old school mold to introduce a strong and sassy female persona that has since come to dominate the country charts. Selecting or co-writing all the songs herself, she put together the production team of Blake Chancey and Paul Worley to oversee the recordings. The duo later applied a similar formula to superstar success with The Dixie Chicks, who re-recorded Tonight the Heartache's on Me (a hit single for the Chicks) and Cold Day in July from White's albums. With 1997's The Lucky Few, White hit Number One on the Americana chart. She also honed her talents as a songwriter to win a staff writer deal with Welk Music while continuing to broaden her musical range as an emotionally riveting live performer. Recent years have found White also developing a European fan base, headlining the Vikedal Roots Festival in Norway and touring England with her friend Suzi Ragsdale. In 2002 she issued a limited release CD of her song demos, On Her Own, to sell at shows and on her website (www.joylynnwhite.com). Even without a publicity campaign, the disc nonetheless won kudos from the press in America and abroad. White is also included in Stephen Foehr's Waking Up in Nashville; a book published in 2002 which accurately portrays the in's & out's of the music business. Foehr well documents White's undaunted abilities and endurance in Music City. She is described as one of the "unapologetic females in the country music business" and one of the "most seasoned purveyors of country music that has claimed to be America's music." Foehr emphatically states that "when she sings the worry lines and concerns are heard." White's most recent creative triumph came with being cast as a lead actress in Keep on the Sunny Side: The Songs and Story of the Carter Family. Singing, playing guitar and acting the role of Mother Maybelle Carter, White won standing ovations night after night during the production's sold-out run at the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, VA and on tour at other theaters in Virginia and Tennessee. She is in the midst of independently recording her first full album of original material, co-producing the sessions with noted producer Kyle Lehning (known for his work with Travis, George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Kenny Rogers, England Dan & John Ford Coley and The Derailers). "Joy Lynn White is a bewitching siren who deserves a wider audience," insists Country Weekly, while Stereo Review praises her as the "fiery redhead with a wild-and-wounded delivery and an attitude that says she is not to be ignored." Not content to rest on such laurels, White continues to stay one or more steps ahead of the pack as she refines and expands her talents. And as Modern Screen's Country Music says of White, "true talent has a way of lasting." So when success finally catches up with her, Joy Lynn White will have made her mark on her own terms - the ultimate artistic triumph. www.joylynnwhite.com Check out the artist's website: http://www.joylynnwhite.com Track List: 1.
