Tomorrow Brings the Sun is the latest release by Maryland area guitarist-vocalist-composer Phil Sims. It is an eclectic blend of jazz, folk, acoustic and art song styles. Many of the tracks are performed live to two-track and are presented unedited. Sims' version of Summertime displays an interesting combination of vocal and guitar styles, making use of scat, walking bass lines, fast single note jazz lines, and octaves a la Wes Montgomery, all delivered powerfully as a live studio event. His version of Dave Mason's Sad and Deep As You displays what some have called a Simon and Garfunkel or Crosby Stills and Nash type vocal arrangement. His version of Bill Withers' Ain't No Sunshine is perhaps very similar to the free form stylings of Al Jarreau or Bobby McFerrin. There is even more variety in the 17 original compositions that appear on this album. Magdalena, the opening song, is what may be described as a majestic lament accompanied by an unusual classic guitar background. This and many other songs on the album might be considered a combination of pop and art song styles from a standpoint of lyrics. Tomorrow Brings the Sun, the title track, is an essay on the nature of youthful love that somehow lasts a lifetime. In contrast to Tomorrow Brings the Sun, Look in Your Eyes' intense vocals on top of an orchestral background is reminiscent of Moody Blues.
