Paul Carter is an introspective quiet kind of a man. Shy even. He very rarely performs publicly, but does enjoy playing with friends or family.
No spring chicken, Carter started guitar picking more than 40 years ago. He did rock in the 50's, folk in the 60's, classical guitar in the 70's, and spent a good part of the 80's fiddling and cello-ing. And then someone threw a mandolin his way. He was smitten.
Finding that his flat-picking history and his recent fiddle studies enabled him to play the mandolin pretty well from the get go, he put all his musical energy, delightedly, into mandolin picking...first old timey and then Celtic, with a definite preference for airs and waltzes.
His instrument of choice now is his one of a kind 10-string alsaxe... designed and constructed for him by his good friend Alex Elliot, a well known antique restorer and instrument maker. Smaller than a guitar, bigger than a mandolin, the alsaxe beautifully combines the best qualities of each, resulting a most satisfying and unique sonority.
"Late Night Alsaxe" was recorded in Carter's third floor apartment...as indicated, late at night after the street noise had ebbed.
