Acoustic Charlottesville describes David Kleiner this way:

"David is a song craftsman... with an obvious awareness of how songs go together, what makes them work, and how to bring words and music together in a way that they can express a more complete picture than the parts could alone. His songs cover a lot of territory, from old friendships to classified ad personals to slice-of-life vignettes... often written with a bitter-sweet sense of humor."

"Craftsman" is an accurate word, since David has conducted scores of workshops for adults and young people on the craft of songwriting. As the lead reviewer for singer songwriter material at Minor7th.com, he has written critically about the work of other singers and songwriters for years. "This Human Heart" gives the teacher and critic the chance to put his music where his mouth has been.

David has headlined clubs such as Charlottesville, Virginia's venerable Prism Coffeehouse and the Aerie in Eagles Mere, PA. He's opened for folk acts such as We're About Nine and Hot Soup and rockers including Dave Matthews. But "This Human Heart" is his first full blown studio production.

David had a vision for a thematic set of songs about the heart he'd developed over years of performances. Grammy Award winning Glenn Barratt (Phil Roy, Sister Sledge, Shirley Caesar) of MorningStar Studios embraced that vision: producing, engineering, mixing, and mastering. Glenn handpicked a crackerjack band to record most of the basic tracks live with David. And what a band: Chico Huff (James Taylor, Pat Martino) on bass, Jef Lee Johnson (George Duke, Chaka Khan, Leon Russell) on almost anything with strings, the miracle of Curt Johnston on dobro, pedal steel, and mandolin, the rock steady Grant McAvoy on drums, and the gentle spirit and swinging growl of Joel Bryant on the Hammond B3 organ and Wurlitzer. Later, for just the right sweetening, Glenn drafted Doc Gibbs (Emeril Live!) for percussion, Philly fav Alfred James on cello, and Diane Monroe (Max Roach) on violin.

David also brought in musicians he'd worked with for years in Charlottesville, Virginia: Mary Gordon Hall (Soul Canoe), whose pure tones and lovely harmonies make David's perfect complement, trumpeter John D'earth (Bruce Hornsby, John Abercrombie, Miles Davis), fiddler Laura Light, producer and multi-instrumentalist Jeff Romano, and the astonishing Gary Green, the Hohner world champion harmonica player.

The result is "This Human Heart," the songwriting teacher's presentation to the class, Check it out, because the teacher says this one counts. It really counts.
