David Ives has been writing songs since the age of 12 and played in bands throughout high school and college. After college he continued to write music even as he pursued and advertising career. Starting as a copywriter, he helped build a successful Chicago advertising agency.

However, his first love is still writing music. Much more than a hobby, it is a second career that has occupied literally thousands of his nighttime and weekend hours, working mostly alone with a tape recorder. As it is with creative artists generally, he has felt the need to continue to create and express himself musically regardless of public attention.

While David has been writing songs for many years his first "finished" album, Marker, came out in 1996. Most of the songs focused on issues surrounding the subject of time: change, nostalgia, questions about our past and future. It received airplay on over 30 stations nationwide.

David's second album, Monument, was released a few months ago. Begun in late 2002, a tragic event changed the focus of the album and songs. David's oldest son, Matthew, died suddenly from acute leukemia in the spring of 2002. After being unable to do anything musically for several months, David began writing songs that expressed the emotions and thoughts tied to his family's devastating loss. The album became a tribute, a "Monument," to Matt.

It is difficult to describe David's music stylistically. It has strong elements of rock, pop, folk and country and is heavily influenced by some of the great bands and solo artists of the 60's and 70's. Bands like the Beatles, the Byrds, Neil Young and James Talyor. Yet there are also songs that weave in other musical styles, such as the Copland-inspired orchestral approach to "Oldest Son" on Monument. He is a believer the "melody," in creating songs that stand by themselves. While primarily a guitar player, he also plays keyboards and handles the string and horn arrangements on his songs.

David's music and voice grow on you. There can be beauty and strength within the rock/pop song format. Listen closely and you'll find that his songs offer a unique sincerity and musicality that becomes even more enjoyable over time.
